Post Concussion Management and Rehabilitation

Lately, concussions have become a very big topic in the media, professional sports, and even amateur sports.  Although most of this attention is negative, there is a positive coming out of this, and that is the extensive research that has been done and is continuing to go into concussion care.

Concussions should be thought of the same as a knee or shoulder injury when it comes to care and rehab. Just like a knee injury is split up into things like ACL, MCL, muscle, bone, a concussion is simply not just a concussion, but split up into 6 different reasons that symptoms can be produced. These 6 different causes effect your body’s different systems which produce negative outcomes such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, difficulty thinking or concentrating, and much more.  Just like after a knee injury, sitting in a dark room without any kind of TV/computer screens for a week is not a sufficient way to heal a concussion, it must be rehabbed.

When someone comes to Dynamic Chiropractic & Sports Therapy Center with a suspected concussion, they will be put through a variety of tests to discover which systems are all affected.  Once that is figured out, we will set up a rehabilitation program to correct the interferences in those systems and eliminate the symptoms brought on by a concussion. We will also work with teachers, coaches, and work supervisors with return to school/play/work programs to ensure the patient can return to normal everyday life as soon as possible while not risking further injury.

What Makes Us Different?

Most clinics limit their concussion testing/management to a computer system with a few questions.  At Dynamic Chiropractic and Sports Therapy Center, we take the time to sit down with the patient one on one for 30-60 minutes to make sure we test every system individually and come up with a specific rehabilitation plan for every patient.  No one concussion is the same!  Our concussion testing and rehabilitation involves the following:

Cognitive Assessment:

  • Reaction Time
  • Delayed Recall
  • Immediate Memory
  • Concentration

Basic Neurologic Examination:

  • Myotomes
  • Dermatomes
  • Reflexes
  • Rhombergs balance

Occulomotor Examination:

  • Horizontal and Vertical Saccades
  • Near Point Convergence
  • Smooth Pursuits
  • Accomodation and Gaze

Vestibular Examination:

  • Double leg stance
  • Single leg stance
  • Tandem stance
  • Optokinetic Reflex
  • Visual Motion Sensitivity

Neck Examination:

  • Cervical Spine Range of Motion
  • Orthopedic Testing
  • Muscle and Joint Palpation
  • Cervical Spine Proprioception Testing
