Quality CareWe've been there and we're there for you.
Dr. Ben Townsend, D.C. has a passion for concussion care, as it is the reason he had to stop playing hockey at 20 years old. Dr. Ben has taken seminars across Canada from Vancouver to Guelph on the topic of concussion detection, management, and rehabilitation as well as many online courses. He is a Credentialed ImPACT Consultant as well as a certified Shift Concussion Management Level 1 and Level 2 provider.
Given the complexities of concussion management, it is important to manage concussions on an individualized basis and to implement baseline testing and/or post-injury neurocognitive testing whenever possible.
Although many baseline tests use soley ImPACT computerized testing, we at Dynamic Chiropractic & Sports Therapy Center feel it is extremely important to test more than just that. ImPACT testing will test the cognitive system in a person, but as you will read below, a concussion effects so much more than just that. At our clinic, we will not only put the patient through a ImPACT baseline test, but we will test the occulomotor system (the way your eyes track objects and accommodate to different movements) and the vestibular system (balance, visual motion system, and optokinetic reflex). All these tests will be recorded, and if a patient comes in with a suspected concussion, they will be put through these tests again. The results of each test will then be compared to his/her baseline tests which will help us assess the possibility of the patient having a concussion.
More about ImPACT: Immediate post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing is a computerized exam used in many professional (NFL, NHL, MLB, USA Olympic Team), collegiate, and high school sports programs across the country. ImPACT is the most-widely used and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system. This simple test is set up in a video-game type format and takes about 30 minutes to complete. It tracks information such as memory, reaction time, speed, and concentration.
Post Concussion Management and Rehabilitation
Lately, concussions have become a very big topic in the media, professional sports, and even amateur sports. Although most of this attention is negative, there is a positive coming out of this, and that is the extensive research that has been done and is continuing to go into concussion care.
Concussions should be thought of the same as a knee or shoulder injury when it comes to care and rehab. Just like a knee injury is split up into things like ACL, MCL, muscle, bone, a concussion is simply not just a concussion, but split up into 6 different reasons that symptoms can be produced. These 6 different causes effect your body’s different systems which produce negative outcomes such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, difficulty thinking or concentrating, and much more. Just like after a knee injury, sitting in a dark room without any kind of TV/computer screens for a week is not a sufficient way to heal a concussion, it must be rehabbed.
When someone comes to Dynamic Chiropractic & Sports Therapy Center with a suspected concussion, they will be put through a variety of tests to discover which systems are all affected. Once that is figured out, we will set up a rehabilitation program to correct the interferences in those systems and eliminate the symptoms brought on by a concussion. We will also work with teachers, coaches, and work supervisors with return to school/play/work programs to ensure the patient can return to normal everyday life as soon as possible while not risking further injury.
What Makes Us Different?
Most clinics limit their concussion testing/management to a computer system with a few questions. At Dynamic Chiropractic and Sports Therapy Center, we take the time to sit down with the patient one on one for 30-60 minutes to make sure we test every system individually and come up with a specific rehabilitation plan for every patient. No one concussion is the same! Our concussion testing and rehabilitation involves the following:
- Reaction Time
- Delayed Recall
- Immediate Memory
Basic Neurologic Examination:
- Rhombergs balance
- Horizontal and Vertical Saccades
- Near Point Convergence
- Smooth Pursuits
- Accomodation and Gaze
- Double leg stance
- Single leg stance
- Tandem stance
- Optokinetic Reflex
- Visual Motion Sensitivity
- Cervical Spine Range of Motion
- Orthopedic Testing
- Muscle and Joint Palpation
- Cervical Spine Proprioception Testing
